OOCYTE INTO OVIDUCT OF

FROM FOLLICLE

                                                                  Oocyte transfer

Every year we have mares form which we try to flush an embryo because they won't carry a foal for
one reason or another.  But, when we were not able to recover an embryo either, their future as a
mother was over.  Now, however, there is oocyte transfer.
This procedure involves retrieving the egg from the follicle before the mare ovulates.  A needle guide
and the ultrasound allow a long needle to be inserted into the follicle and the egg (oocyte) to be
flushed into a collecting vial.  From there it is placed in a special CO2 incubator for 6 to 20 hours.
We then repeat the procedure on the recipient mare to be sure her egg is not fertilized.  (Her egg is
discarded.)  Then we breed the recipient mare.
The last step is to surgically open the flank of the recipient mare and transfer the mature egg form the
donor into the oviduct of the recipient mare.
Fertilization occurs in the oviduct of the recipient mare, but it is the donor egg and the stallion's
semen  that result in the pregnancy.
This procedure will work on mares that have adhesions, chronic infection, torn cervix, perineal
lacerations as well as any other problems that make the uterus non-functional.
